The beach has a long history going back to the Romans who built a fort on the shoreline around AD 120. The name Hunstanton comes from ‘Huns’ meaning ‘hills’ and ‘stan’, meaning ‘settlement’. This was changed to Hunstanton in 1817 when it became an official town site on land granted by King George IV. The name was changed back to Hunstanton after WWII due to wartime confusion with nearby Hastings which was also called Hunstanton at that time
